Hydraulic Cylinder Repair — Fontana

A cylinder looks straightforward, but it lives or dies on tight tolerances — and when one leaks, the seals are rarely the whole story. On our Fontana bench every cylinder is rebuilt end to end: it comes apart, rod, bore and gland are measured, honing and rod work happen on our own machines, quality seals go in, and the unit is pressure-tested before it goes back onto the machine.

Resealing versus rebuilding — be sure which one you are paying for

Resealing swaps out the soft parts, and now and then that truly is all a cylinder needs — a fairly new unit with one damaged seal and metal in perfect shape. But put fresh seals against a scored rod, a bore worn bell-mouthed or a gland that sits loose on the rod, and all you have bought is a countdown. A rebuild puts the metal right: rods get repaired or made new, bores are honed or sleeved, glands are restored to a proper fit, and the cylinder is tested as one complete unit.

You will hear from us which of the two your cylinder actually needs, supported by measurements and photos — and you will see the quote before any work starts.

Bent rods, drift and the failures we see every week

Side loads and hard impacts are what bend rods, and the right answer is a replacement rod made to specification — never a gamble on straightening a part that carries load. When a cylinder drifts under load, oil is leaking internally past the piston, and testing separates tired seals from piston wear and bore condition. Oil showing at the gland points to the rod surface and how the gland fits. All of it is everyday work here, across cylinders from excavators, loaders, dozers, forklifts, telehandlers, presses and industrial machinery.

  • Rebuilding cylinders completely, then testing them
  • Repairing rods, re-chroming them, or making new ones
  • Honing barrels and restoring bores
  • Diagnosing bent rods and replacing them
  • Diagnosing drift and leaks that stay inside
  • Machining for custom and obsolete cylinders

How a repair moves through our shop, in eight steps

Every job follows the same route: it starts with your first call and ends with a component or machine that has been tested and put back to work.

01

Collection

Where it applies, we arrange to collect your equipment or component at no charge.

02

Hands-on inspection

The unit is stripped down so the whole failure can be assessed properly.

Questions customers ask us most

Oil is leaking at the rod — is resealing enough?

It is enough only when the rod surface and the gland are still in good shape. We measure both and show you the results — when the metal is sound, a reseal is the honest job, and when it is not, we will show you exactly why.

Can a bent hydraulic cylinder rod be repaired?

Treat a bent rod as a safety issue, because it carries load. Rather than straighten a rod that has been compromised, we manufacture a replacement to specification.

What makes my cylinder sink slowly while it is loaded?

Most often, oil is slipping past the piston seals internally, or the bore has worn. A drift test pins down whether the cylinder or the control valve is at fault before any money gets spent.

Do large industrial cylinders get repaired here as well?

Yes — press cylinders, lift cylinders and other industrial units all go across the same bench and are held to the same rebuild standard.
